Amy Goodman talked about her book The Exception to the Rulers: Exposing Oily Politicians, War Profiteers, and the Media That Love Them, published by Hyperion. Ms. Goodman listed what she sees as human rights violations and calls for government accountability and media responsibility. Ms. Goodman recalled her personal experience in East Timor, where she witnessed what she describes as a massacre and described being beaten by Indonesian soldiers while trying to make a documentary about the government in that country. She critiqued the commercial news media and discussed the importance of independent media. There was no audience question period.

The event “Independent Media in a Time of War” was co-sponsored by Amnesty International and held in the McLeod Hall Auditorium. close
