Panelists spoke on the topic “What Makes an American? Historical Perspectives on Immigration.” They addressed issues such as repeating patterns of immigration to the U.S., perceptions of immigration at the founding of the nation, social, political, and cultural attitudes toward immigrants at various parties in American history, and the impact of anti-immigrant feelings near the beginning of the 20th century. The also talked about current attempts to facilitate reforms of immigration policy and better enforce U.S. borders. Following their remarks they answered questions from the audience. close
