Richard Rhodes was interviewed onstage by Owen Youngman about his 2004 Pulitzer Prize-winning biography, John James Audubon: The Making of an American, published by Alfred A. Knopf. The illegitimate son of a French naval officer and a chambermaid, the young Audubon was sent to America in 1803 to escape conscription into Napoleon’s army. The author detailed the story of Audubon’s fascination with painting birds, including how he spent years trying to promote his multi-volume Birds of America. Mr. Rhodes also responded to audience members' questions. close
