In the book Professor Oshinsky chronicles the history of polio, the viral disease that became an epidemic in the 1950's, and discusses President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s efforts to help find a cure, revolutionizing the way research money was obtained to fight the disease. He also examines the role President Roosevelt played in creating the March of Dimes, a philanthropic organization that played a pivotal role helping with research, rehabilitation, and fundraising in fighting polio. In his talk he described the summer polio epidemics of the 1950s and talked about why polio was epidemic in the U.S. much more than in other countries, President Roosevelt and the March of Dimes, and the development of polio vaccines. After his presentation he answered audience members' questions.
