Representative Peterson talked about the offshore gas and oil drilling legislation he helped draft, HR 4761, being debated by the House later in the day. The bill would lift a current ban that prohibits drilling for natural gas and oil within 50 miles of U.S. shores. Under the bill, states would have the power to allow drilling if they choose. Drilling would also be allowed 100-200 miles offshore unless a state blocked the exploration. If they allow drilling, states would be given a share of royalties, which are currently all paid to the federal government by energy companies. The guest responded to audience telephone calls and electronic mail. close
