The House committee heard testimony about Iraq’s compliance with United Nations resolutions concerning their ownership and production of weapons. Ambassador Pickering and Mr. Bolton testified on the efforts of United Nations inspectors to learn of the true extent of Iraq’s weapons and armament production. Following the Persian Gulf war, Iraq agreed to reveal its weapons sites and armaments to U.N. inspection teams as part of the terms of the cease-fire. A U.N. inspection team, in Iraq at a weapons site, spotted an Iraqi convoy carting uranium enrichment machines away from the weapons site. As a result of a demand by the U.N. Security Council, on July 7 Iraq announced it still maintained secret plants for enriching uranium. On July 18, Iraq announced it had declared all its secret nuclear plants and knowledge of the production of nuclear weapons. In preceding weeks, President Bush had indicated the U.S. would use military force to eliminate Iraq’s ability to produce nuclear weapons. The two witnesses provided information on the extent of Iraq’s development of nuclear weapons production sites. close
