Live NASA coverage of Space Shuttle Discovery was shown with live launch commentary by NASA Launch Commentator Bruce Buckingham. The countdown

was shown beginning at 1:43 p.m. The launch occurred at 2:38 p.m. EDT. Cameras followed the shuttle into the air. Live shots were shown of on-board cameras checking the foam on the outside of the fuel tanks. Live shots were also shown of Mission Control.

This was the first shuttle launch since Discovery last flew in July 2005. It would be only the second flight since Columbia exploded in 2003. The crew of STS-121 was Commander Steve Lindsey; Pilot Mark Kelly; mission specialists Michael Fossum, Lisa Nowak, Stephanie Wilson, Piers Sellers and Thomas Reiter of the European Space Agency. close
