The Commission on U.S.-Japan Relations for the 21st Century, a group of businesspeople, government representatives, and scholars of East Asian affairs, sponsored a conference entitled “Preparing for a Pacific Century,” in Washington. The conference’s forum entitled, “In Search of Post Containment Stability in the Pacific,” examined the security interests of East Asian countries following the end of the Cold War. Participants in the discussion spoke on issues affecting East Asian countries such as U.S. defense treaties with Japan and the influence of the Soviet Union over countries in East Asia. close
