Debby Applegate talked about her book The Most Famous Man in America: The Biography of Henry Ward Beecher, published by Doubleday. Ms. Applegate explained that minister and abolitionist Henry Beecher, the brother of author Harriet Beecher Stowe, used fiery speeches and newspaper articles to become one of America’s first media celebrities. She also detailed the trial in which he was accused of committing adultery with his best friend’s wife. After her presentation she responded to audience members' questions. close
