Sharon Weinberger talked about her book Imaginary Weapons: A Journey Through the Pentagon’s Scientific Underworld, published by Nation Books. She discussed the U.S. government’s history of funding unconventional weapons projects, and she assessed their feasibility. She focused on the Defense Department’s unsuccessful efforts to develop an isomer bomb, a grenade-sized explosive device which in theory would have the power of a nuclear bomb. She argued that there should be more oversight of such unconventional weapons programs that don’t work but continue to get billions of dollars in funding. After her presentation she responded to audience members' questions. close
