The high demand and price for the toothfish in the United States and elsewhere has attracted poachers who catch the fish in huge quantities. As a result, the population of the toothfish has dropped by over 90 percent since the middle of the last century. During his talk, Mr. Knecht told the story of the capture of one of these poaching vessels by an Australian government patrol boat in 2003, after one of the longest chases in maritime history. He showed video footage of the chase and capture and shared stories about his encounters with the captain of the poaching vessel. After his presentation he responded to audience members' questions.
