The plenary session of the NAACP 97th Annual Convention included speakers Senator Reid and Congressional Black Caucus Chairman Rep. Watt. Mr. Fred Gray, whose clients have included Rosa Parks and Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr., was presented with the William Robert Ming Advocacy Award by Mr. Hayes.

The speakers' topics included civil rights and race relations, legislative and government policies affecting the black community, and the role of the NAACP in advancing the black community’s agenda in Washington and throughout the country. Mr. Gordon, in his keynote address, spoke about his role as the new president of the NAACP, his invitation to President Bush to address the convention, and his vision of the agenda for the organization. close
