George Lakoff talked about his book Whose Freedom?: The Battle Over America’s Most Important Idea, published by Farrar, Straus and Giroux. He said the United States is divided by two dramatically different worldviews on the notion of freedom. Progressives and conservatives have different value systems that expand the notion of freedom in opposite directions. According to Professor Lakoff, progressives encourage social security, the minimum wage, universal health care, and college for all as ways to guarantee freedom from want. Conservatives believe giving people things they haven’t earned creates dependency and robs people of their freedom. After his presentation he responded to audience members' questions. close
