Charles Stevenson talked about his book SECDEF: The Nearly Impossible Job of Secretary of Defense, published by Potomac Books. He examined what he considers to be the most difficult job in Washington, the Secretary of Defense. As national security adviser to four U.S. senators, Mr. Stevenson has had the opportunity to observe those who have held the Defense Secretary position. He revealed that since its creation in 1947, only half of the 21 men who have held the post have served more than 18 months. Others who have held the Secretary of Defense post have resigned either in frustration or disappointment. He categorized individuals who held this post as revolutionaries, firefighters, or team players. He analyzed each type, defined characteristics, and explained how Defense Secretaries Donald Rumsfeld, Robert McNamara, and James Forrestal in particular performed their jobs. After his presentation the author responded to audience members' questions. close
