The House Subcommittee on National Security, Emerging Threats and International Relations held a hearing on the topic, “What Will it Take to Achieve National Reconciliation?” Mr. Satterfield testified about the security situation in Iraq, the problems of growing sectarian violence, and Iraqi government efforts to control the situation. His testimony was followed by a panel of Iraqi Shiite, Sunni and Kurds leaders who presented various potential approaches to national reconciliation. Testimony during both panels focused on militias and death squads, oil revenue sharing, the potential for civil war, de-Ba’athification, and possible consequences if Iraq split into three states.
