The House Subcommittee on National Security, Emerging Threats and International Relations held a hearing on the topic, “What Will it Take to Achieve National Reconciliation?” Mr. Satterfield testified about the security situation in Iraq, the problems of growing sectarian violence, and Iraqi government efforts to control the situation. His testimony was followed by a panel of Iraqi Shiite, Sunni and Kurds leaders who presented various potential approaches to national reconciliation. Testimony during both panels focused on militias and death squads, oil revenue sharing, the potential for civil war, de-Ba’athification, and possible consequences if Iraq split into three states.

The witnesses included Qubad Talabani, representative of the Kurdish Regional Government; Hajim Hassani, former speaker of the Iraqi Parliament and a Sunni Member of Parliament; Karim Almusawi, representative of the largest political party in Iraq, the Supreme Council for the Islamic Revolution in Iraq (SCIRI), a Shiite party; and Ambassador David Satterfield, formerly Deputy to U.S. Ambassador Zalmay Khalilzad in Baghdad and currently Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice’s senior advisor on Iraq. close
