The House Judiciary Subcommittee on Courts, the Internet, and Intellectual Property held a hearing on H.Res. 916, “Impeaching Manuel L. Real, judge of the United States District Court for the Central District of California, for high crimes and misdemeanors.” Judge Real had served on the federal bench in Los Angeles since 1966, and had allegedly seized control of a bankruptcy case involving a defendant he knew, then allowed the defendant, Deborah Canter, to live rent-free in a house she’d been ordered to vacate. In the hearing he denied any special treatment for or communications with Ms. Canter, whom he knew because she was a defendant before him in a separate criminal case and he then supervised her probation. He said he only interceded in the bankruptcy case because he discovered that a pre-sentencing report from the criminal case, which only he was allowed to release, had improperly been filed in the bankruptcy court. close
