Donald Jackson, chief calligrapher for the St. John’s Bible, appeared on “The Book Guys” radio show to talk about the calligraphy and other arts that are going into the creation of the first hand-written Bible in over 500 years, the St. John’s Bible. The Bible is being reproduced in seven vlumnes by Liturgical Press. Mr. Jackson said that in 1998 he approached the Benedictine monks of Saint John’s University and Abbey in Collegeville, Minnesota, with his life-long dream of creating the first handwritten, illuminated bible since the invention of the printing press. He is using ancient materials and techniques for the Bible which may be completed by 2007. Mr. Jackson demonstrated calligraphy techniques. Hand-drawn text and illustrations were shown and described. Also, Nicholas Basbanes contributed his regular segment of the program by telephone.
