A retired senior officer in the Central Intelligence Agency, his first tour with the CIA was in Iran, where he was one of fifty-two Americans held hostage for 444 days during the Carter administration. He also wrote In the Shadow of the Ayatollah: A CIA Hostage in Iran. His last assignment was in the area of covert action policy and included serving as CIA liaison officer to the National Security Council staff. After his presentation he responded to audience members' questions.
This event at the Greenville Country Club was the award ceremony for the 2006 Paolucci/Bagehot Book Award from the Intercollegiate Studies Institute. Mark Bowden, author of Black Hawk Down, provided the opening remarks. He wrote the foreword to Executive Secrets. The award presentation and reception followed Mr. Daugherty’s lecture.
