Officials of the Worldwatch Institute introduced the latest edition of their annual report, State of the World 2007: Our Urban Future, published by W.W. Norton. Experts who contributed to the report discussed the effects of urbanization on humans, using many details from the book. In 2008, half of the Earth’s population will live in urban areas, marking the first time in history that humans are an urban species. After their presentations the participants responded to questions from reporters and others.

Peter Newman was co-author of chapter 4, “Greening Urban Transportation.” Janet Sawin was the co-author of chapter 5, “Energizing Cities.” Princess Dana Firas of Jordan also contributed to portions of the book about the Middle East.

The event was held at the National Press Club. close
