Anniversary of Common Sense by Thomas Paine
The publication in Philadelphia of Thomas Paine’s “Common Sense” on January 10, 1776 was a watershed of the American Revolution. At the time, a majority of colonists were still wavering about the idea of independence from Great Britain, but Paine’s pamphlet galvanized opposition to the Crown and served as the final catalyst for political separation and creation of the first modern republic. Through this pivotal pamphlet, Paine joined the ranks of the Founding Fathers, even though he did not receive credit for his achievement until two centuries later.
Judah Freed is the author of Global Sense: Awakening Your Personal Power for Democracy and World Peace, published by Media Visions Press Ltd, written to be a modern update of Common Sense.
The event was hosted by The Library Company of Philadelphia, founded in 1731 by Ben Franklin.
