The Senate Armed Services Committee held a hearing to consider the nomination of Admiral William J. Fallon, USN, for reappointment to the grade of admiral and to be commander of the U.S. Central Command. In his testimony he provided his assessment of the security situation in Iraq, talked about the president’s plan to send an additional 21,500 troops to improve security in Iraq, and said that previous strategies in the region had failed to meet U.S. goals. He also talked about possible Iranian involvement in Iraq, regional security threats posed by terrorist organizations, and operations in Afghanistan. close
