The Senate Armed Services Committee held a confirmation hearing on the nomination of Gen. George W. Casey Jr. to be reappointed to the grade of general and to be chief of staff of the Army. In his testimony General Casey disputed charges that the policy he had helped to implement had failed, and insisted that the war was “winnable” if the United States showed patience and will. He defended his decision to request additional U.S. troops in Baghdad after having previously opposed such a deployment. He also acknowledged that Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki did not request the 21,500 troops that President Bush has decided to send and said Maliki generally opposed increasing the U.S. military presence in his country. close
