Secretary Leavitt testified about the proposed fiscal year 2008 budget for the Department of Health and Human Services. Among the issues raised were administration proposals for more than $100 billion in cuts in projected Medicare and Medicaid spending, funding for medical research, and maintaining health coverage for millions of children. Several members focused on focused on President Bush’s proposal to increase funding for the state-federal Children’s Health Insurance Program by $4.8 billion over the next five years and claims by analysts that the program required an increase of $12 billion to $15 billion to keep pace with current enrollment because of rising health-care costs. close
