Participating by remote connection, two authors talked separately about their books and responded to telephone calls. Mr. Roberts spoke from New York City after being introduced by a video clip from a 2002 “Booknotes” interview. Mr. Johnson spoke from California after being introduced by a video clip from a 2006 “Q&A” interview.

Andrew Roberts talked about his book, A History of the English-Speaking Peoples Since 1900, published by HarperCollins. In his book he argued that the 20th century belonged to the English-speaking people of the world. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature and of the Royal Society of Arts. He was formerly the editor of the London Times.

Chalmers Johnson talked about his book, Nemesis: The Last Days of the American Republic, the third installment of his trilogy American Empire Project published by Metropolitan Books. Professor Johnson, currently the president of the Japan Policy Institute, taught Asian politics at the Berkeley and San Diego campuses of the University of California for thirty years before retiring in 1992. close
