Richard Vedder talked about the book he co-wrote with Wendell Cox, The Wal-Mart Revolution: How Big Box Stores Benefit Consumers, Workers, and the Economy, published by AEI Press. Wal-Mart is the world’s largest retailer. In the book the available economic data was analyzed to determine Wal-Mart’s impact on consumers, employee wages and benefits (including health care), and local economies. Mr. Grossman said that Wal-Mart has changed since the death of its founder Sam Walton to a somewhat anti-consumer stance. He also criticized Wal-Mart’s employment policies and high employee turnover. Mr. Barone talked about positive attitudes toward Wal-Mart in poll results and about some attempts to unionize the company. He addressed the impact of the Wal-Mart issue on the 2008 elections. Mr. Hassett moderated. The participants responded to audience members' questions. close
