Sarah Igo talked about her book, The Averaged American: Surveys, Citizens, and the Making of a Mass Public, published by Harvard University Press. She argued that opinion polls, sex surveys, and consumer research are a 20th-century innovation that changed the way Americans think about themselves. Studies such as the Gallup Poll and the Kinsey Reports prompted Americans to begin defining themselves and their nation in terms of majority opinion and mainstream beliefs. After her presentation she responded to audience members' questions. close
