Former Senator Edward Brooke talked about his memoir Bridging the Divide: My Life. In 1967, Edward Brooke, an officer in the U.S. Army in Europe during World War II, became the first popularly elected African American to join the U.S. Senate. He served as the Republican senator from Massachusetts from 1967 to 1979. He was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2004. He talked about his personal and political life and the current state of culture and politics. He responded to questions from members of the audience. close
