Diedtra Henderson talked about Food and Drug Administration oversight of food safety. On May 1 the FDA appointed Dr. David Acheson as “food czar,” or Assistant Commissioner for Food Protection, to develop a plan to address some of the recent problems in food safety. On May 2 the Senate also addressed the food safety issue by adopting an amendment by Senator Durbin to the FDA authorization bill that gives the FDA authority to fine food manufacturers that do not report food contamination promptly to the agency. She also discussed how contaminated pet food has affected human food supply in the U.S. and other countries. Ms. Henderson responded to telephone calls and electronic mail. close
