Gene Roberts talked about the book he co-wrote The Race Beat: The Press, the Civil Rights Struggle, and the Awakening of a Nation, published by Knopf. The book tells how news coverage of events in the South awakened the nation to the Civil Rights struggle. Mr. Roberts talked about the forces that suppressed such news coverage and the editors who did print it. Mr. Roberts also recounted his experiences as a reporter. He responded to questions from members of the audience. close
