Ann Hagedorn talked about her book, Savage Peace: Hope and Fear in America, 1919, published by Simon and Schuster. She described America in 1919 as a country recovering from World War I and from the world-wide flu pandemic. Instead of the hope of peace, a fear of Bolshevism swept the country and led to a greater surveillance of the citizenry and diversion of criticism of the government. Ms. Hagedorn recounted a twenty-four-year-old J. Edgar Hoover’s rise to the head of a new division of the Bureau of Investigation (the forbearer to the FBI). She focused on both the political and the social factors that shaped the year. After her presentation she responded to audience members' questions. close
