The first public meeting was held of the independent review panel established by Governor Timothy Kaine. The panel will review the circumstances surrounding the tragedy on the campus of Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in Blacksburg on April 16, when a student killed 32 students and professors and wounded more before committing suicide.

After opening remarks by Governor Kaine and Virginia Tech President Steger, the panel chairman introduced the seven other members and convened the public meeting. Witnesses covered topics such as mental health issues, gun laws, law enforcement investigation, plans for interviewing individuals, and the research process. Several Virginia residents spoke at the end of the session. close
