Khaled Hosseini talked about his novel A Thousand Splendid Suns, published by Riverhead. His book told the story of two Afghan women who lived through monarchy, Communism, and the Taliban in a society where women were often mistreated. The novel covered a range of social issues, including religion, sex, class, education and motherhood.

The son of an Afghan diplomat, Khaled Hosseini moved to the United States in 1980 after the Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan. While a practicing medical doctor, Dr. Hosseini wrote The Kite Runner, an international bestseller. He quit practicing medicine in 2004 and in 2006 was named a goodwill ambassador of the U.N. High Commission on Refugees. close
