The son of an Afghan diplomat, Khaled Hosseini moved to the United States in 1980 after the Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan. While a practicing medical doctor, Dr. Hosseini wrote The Kite Runner, an international bestseller. He quit practicing medicine in 2004 and in 2006 was named a goodwill ambassador of the U.N. High Commission on Refugees.

Khaled Hosseini talked about his novel A Thousand Splendid Suns, published by Riverhead. His book told the story of two Afghan women who lived through monarchy, Communism, and the Taliban in a society where women were often mistreated. The novel covered a range of social issues, including religion, sex, class, education and motherhood.
