Representative Dave Camp, ranking member of the House Ways and Means Health Subcommittee, talked about the State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP). The program covers about 6 million children from families with smaller incomes but not poor enough to qualify for Medicaid. The House bill, which is in markup later in the day by the House Ways and Means Committee, expands the program by calling for spending $75 billion over five years. That is $45 billion more than what President Bush had proposed. Representative Camp responded to telephone calls and electronic mail. close
