The House Small Business Subcommittee on Regulations, Business Opportunity, and Energy met to discuss the issues surrounding the development of a new cancer drug and the implications of its manufacturing by national drug companies. Recently it has been discovered that the bark of the Pacific Yew tree contains a substance called Taxol, which is thought to aid in the prevention and treatment of cancer. The trees are found in federal old-growth forests of the Pacific Northwest, which are protected by wildlife and preservation acts. Bristol-Myers Squibb, a pharmaceutical company has entered into a number of exclusive agreements for the development of drugs from the substance Taxol. The subcommittee also examined whether these agreements may fail to protect consumers from potential overpricing of drugs manufactured by the company. close
