Mr. Cortez spoke on the rise in the Hispanic population in America during the Community Services conference in Washington, DC sponsored by the AFL-CIO. The Community Services conference brought together legislators, labor leaders, and public policy leaders to speak on issues of importance to labor. Mr. Cortez discussed the problems facing the Hispanic population, including low wages and little education. He said the Mexican economy would continue to be unable to absorb the growing number of Hispanics entering the labor force, and called for the full protection of American labor laws for the new Hispanic immigrant workers who come to the U.S. as a result of the slow-growth Mexican economy. close
