The co-authors read from their book, In the Shadow of the Civil War: Passmore Williamson and the Rescue of Jane Johnson, published by University of South Carolina Press. They also told the story of Passmore Williamson and Jane Johnson. In July 1855 Philadelphia Quaker and abolitionist Passmore Williamson and his friend William Still, responding to a written plea, liberated slave Jane Johnson and her two children at a dock in Camden, New Jersey. The slave’s owner, Colonel John Hill Wheeler, was a personal friend of President Franklin Pierce and as a result was able to have Williamson imprisoned. Passmore Williamson became an abolitionist martyr as the case led to a courtroom trial and legal confrontation regarding the institution of slavery.
