Freelance journalist Doug Grindle was in the area of Balad, Iraq, about 50 miles north of Baghdad, embedded with the U.S. Army in August 2007. He patrolled with a unit called "Lightning Strike", made up of ground and aviation troops, as they searched for weapons hidden in the area.
Since 2004, Doug Grindle has made nine trips to Iraq and four to Afghanistan.
