The House Judiciary Committee held an oversight hearing on the use of National Security Letters by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

In response to a question by Representative Jackson, Mr. Mueller contradicted sworn testimony made by Attorney General Ashcroft to the Senate Judiciary Committee. Director Mueller said that there were disagreements within the Justice Department and FBI over the continuation of the terrorist surveillance program and the legal basis for the program which was discussed among White House officials, law enforcement, and congressional members in March 2004. Attorney General Ashcroft had said that the disagreement was over other intelligence matters. close
