Mr. T. Kumar, the advocacy director for Asia and the Pacific of Amnesty International USA released a report on the August 2008 Olympics in Beijing titled “China: Olympics Crackdown -- One Year Left to Fulfill Human Rights Promises.” The report analyzed the state of human rights in China and trends since the Olympics were awarded to China in 2001. It also focused on promises given by Chinese officials while bidding for the games about improving human rights if they were awarded. In his remarks he spoke about media freedom, “re-education” through labor camps, China as the world’s leading executioner, Internet censorship, and targeting of lawyers and human rights defenders. He also responded to questions from the audience. close
