David Hajdu talked about his book, The Ten Cent Plague, in which he recounted the beginnings of the comic book industry and the controversy that ensued, with Krin Gabbard. During the 1950's comic book sales ballooned with popular publications that included collections of horror stories that critics found violent and inappropriate for children. Mr. Hajdu relayed the research of Frederic Wertham, whose publication of “Seduction of the Innocent” asserted a correlative between reading comic books and juvenile delinquency. A congressional committee was formed to research this claim headed by Estes Kefauver. After the discussion, Mr. Hajdu responded to audience members' questions. close
