Jack Shaheen talked about his book Guilty: Hollywood’s Verdict on Arabs after 9/11. His book documents the portrayal of Muslim Arabs in American movies and argues that this portrayal, largely negative, has shaped the way Americans view Arabs and U.S. policies towards Arab countries. Mr. Shaheen stressed the importance of these images, since cinema’s prominent, growing place in culture affects public perception and policymaking, which in turn affects media coverage. He argued that entertainment could, on the other hand, be used as a tool to spread accurate depictions and promote peace. After his presentation he responded to audience members' questions.
