General Petraeus and Ambassador Crocker testified about the status of military operations in Iraq and political developments over the past several months during a “surge” in troop levels designed to bolster security in Iraq. General Petraeus said the deployment of 30,000 more troops to Iraq had made enough progress that the additional combat forces could be pulled out by next summer, but cautioned against “rushing to failure” with a larger and speedier withdrawal. They also testified about the continued presence of al-Qaida cells, the levels of sectarian violence, prospects for renewed insurgent activity, and regional security concerns. At points protestors interrupted the hearings before being escorted out of the room by security officers. close
