Representative Bob Michel(R-IL) answered questions regarding the proposed House and Senate investigations of allegations that the 1980 hostages in Iran were released the same day as President Reagan’s inauguration. The inquiry involves a charge that the Reagan/Bush campaign staff negotiated with Iranian officials to postpone a hostage release until Reagan had been elected and inaugurated. Representative Tom Foley (D-WA) continued by explaining his position on why he felt the investigation was necessary and the need to put the matter to rest for the American public. He mentioned that if the investigation were purely political he would have started it much earlier, but that it was necessary to investigate the matter to come to a final conclusion about the issue. close
