The Senate Judiciary Committee held a hearing on the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) and permanently enacting provisions allowing law enforcement to conduct warantless domestic wiretaps without the prior approval of the FISA court. Several members were critical of Mr. McConnell’s past statements and testimony to Congress that warned of dire consequences if congressional leaders failed to allow the surveillance to continue, and several members complained that misstatements by Mr. McConnell had eroded his credibility, particularly regarding the expanded surveillance power. close
