The Justice Department announced a settlement with British Petroleum on charges related to an oil refinery explosion, violations of the Clean Air and Water Act, and allegations of price manipulation. Officials said that $50 million of the fine was for charges arising from a 2005 explosion in Texas City, Texas, the first criminal prosecution under the Clear Air Act. They also said the total was $373 million in fines and restitution, and that four employees were indicted on mail and wire fraud charges. The participants responded to reporters' questions. close
