Stephen Solomon talked about his book Ellery’s Protest: How One Young Man Defied Tradition and Sparked the Battle over School Prayer, published by University of Michigan Press. In his book he chronicles the story of Ellery Schempp who, as 16 year-old student at Abington High School in 1956, objected to the mandatory prayer and reading of Bible verses in his school. In 1957 Ted Mann, a Philadelphia attorney, drafted the Schempp v. Abington Township School District complaint that went to the U.S. Supreme Court in 1963. Mr. Solomon was joined by Ellery Schempp and Ted Mann, who were reunited for the first time in 50 years to discuss the case. close
