Drug Resistant Infections Director Gerberding testified about the cause and spread of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), a bacterium that can cause serious infection and death. It survives most antibiotic treatment and affects some 94,000 people per year, resulting in an estimated 18,000 deaths. A panel of medical experts also testified. Topics included public health consequences, the growing presence of the disease outside of hospitals, sources and epidemiology, the MRSA deaths in Virginia, treatment of MRSA infections, and prevention by hand-washing and other methods. close
