Freelance journalist Doug Grindle was embedded with an Army National Guard unit in U.S. military base Camp Phoenix, which lies on the eastern outskirts of Afghanistan’s capital city of Kabul. He accompanied the troops on some of their patrols in the area, and looked at efforts to provide security for the base.
