Never Been a Time
Harper Barnes is a editor and cultural critic for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Mr. Barnes is the author of Standing on a Volcano: The Life and Times of David Rowland Francis.
Harper Barnes talked about and read excerpts from his book, Never Been a Time: The 1917 Race Riot That Sparked the Civil Rights Movement, published by Walker and Company. The book recounts the July 2, 1917 race riot that took place in East St. Louis, Illinois. The riot that started following the death of a policeman resulted in the deaths of close to 50 people, while hundreds were injured and over 200 buildings were set on fire. Mr. Barnes contends that the riot was one of the factors that contributed to the start of the civil rights movement. Following his remarks, Mr. Barnes answered audience members' questions.
