Joseph Wheelan talked about his book Mr. Adams’s Last Crusade: John Quincy Adams’s Extraordinary Post-Presidential Life in Congress, published by PublicAffairs. In his book Mr. Wheelan documents the post-presidential career of John Quincy Adams. Former President Adams, who was defeated by Andrew Jackson in 1829, decided that rather than retire from political service he would serve as a representative from Massachusetts. John Quincy Adams served in the House of Representatives for seventeen years and during his tenure assisted in the establishment of the Smithsonian Institution and the successful appeal of a gag rule that prohibited abolition petitions. Following his remarks Mr. Wheelan responded to questions from the audience. close
